Practicing Psychology in Rural Settings: Hospital Privileges and Collaborative Care Rural practitioners have been pioneers in gaining hospital privileges for psychologists, but with only 17 states and jurisdictions having passed laws authorizing psychologists to practice in hospital settings, there is still a long way to go. This volume is designed to aid rural psychologists and hospital administrators in educating hospital board members, medical staff, and rural citizens about the valuable contributions that psychologists can make in the care of patients. The volume covers the history of psychology's advancement in hospital settings, covering the social, medical, and economic forces that have slowly opened the door for psychologists' acceptance in traditional medical arenas. Chapters also describe successful collaborative models with physicians and community mental health services, along with the unique services that psychologists can provide to specific populations, such as women and substance abusers. Throughout, the challenges and rewards of working in rural areas are highlighted. This volume illustrates the greater quality of care that can be achieved when psychologists are made part of an interdisciplinary health care team -- a model of care that will benefit both patient and hospital.
The Charioteer by Mary Renault, After enduring an injury at Dunkirk during World War II, Laurie Odell is sent to a rural veterans' hospital in England to convalesce. There he befriends the young, bright Andrew, a conscientious objector serving as an orderly. As they find solace and companionship together in the idyllic surroundings of the hospital, their friendship blooms into a discreet, chaste romance. Then one day, Ralph Lanyon, a mentor from Laurie's schoolboy days, suddenly reappears in Laurie's life, and draws him into a tight-knit social circle of world-weary gay men. Laurie is forced to choose between the sweet ideals of innocence and the distinct pleasures of experience. Originally published in the United States in 1959, The Charioteer is a bold, unapologetic portrayal of male homosexuality during World War II that stands with Gore Vidal's The City and the Pillar and Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories as a monumental work in gay literature.
